Lenovo A850 smartphone review

An inexpensive “plafond” may be quite in demand today, since users often prefer the convenience of surfing the Internet over compact size and common sense. The Lenovo A850 costs a little over 2,000 hryvnia. Moreover, it has a 5.5-inch IPS screen. And a quad-core processor to boot. And it supports two SIM cards.

Design and ergonomics

About convenience, we can only say one thing: if you like “plafonds”, then you will like them; if you consider them funny manifestations of human complexes, then it’s unlikely. Lenovo A850 is not the largest “spade” on the market, but one of the most affordable among those whose diagonal is off scale. 5.5 inches. Quite a lot.

This Android phone is typical, only big. With rounded corners, quite flat (9.5 millimeters), but at the same time weighty (184 grams). For me, traditionally, there is too much of it: the size of my palm is somewhat lacking, and it is inconvenient for me to handle it with one hand, despite the very flexible and mobile fingers that, apparently for fun, nature has endowed me with. But with two hands, as with a small tablet, it’s quite possible.

You just need to hold the smartphone firmly: due to the glossy plastic coating of the back, the A850 tends to slip out of your hands. This backrest is removable and may crack slightly when pressed, but it fits quite tightly. In the lower right corner you can find a nail hook with which you can separate the cover from the smartphone. Underneath it is a large removable battery, two slots for full-size SIM cards, designed so that cut ones can be neatly inserted into them, as well as a hole for microSD. A memory card or SIM card can be placed in the slots without removing the battery, but you cannot remove them without this operation. Regarding SIM cards, this is, of course, not a big deal, but for a memory card I would like to have a hot swap. However, a removable battery is already very good.

The volume buttons are located on the right, the audio jack and the power key are on the top end, and the microUSB for charging is on the bottom.

Like other Lenovo smartphones, the Android touch control buttons are located not on the screen, but below it.

Screen

5.5 inches in a budget smartphone is already good. True, the resolution of this giant is only 540x960 pixels. So the pixels are visible, although I can’t say that they are annoying. In fact, the picture looks quite smooth and pleasing to the eye. Thanks to the discreet colors, fairly high brightness and adequate display contrast. According to the characteristics, the smartphone has a matrix made using IPS technology. In principle, you believe this, only one thing is alarming: if you tilt the smartphone up or down in landscape orientation, the colors are inverted. This is especially noticeable when watching movies. But the deviation of the gaze relative to the other axis does not affect the quality of the picture in any way.

The screen sensor does not slow down and responds to five simultaneous presses. On these frosty days, we were able to verify its performance in the cold (at -10 degrees Celsius there were no problems). In a word, in its price category, such a display is completely justified, and with a low resolution it is quite possible to come to terms with it. If it were higher, the Mali-400 video card would have a really hard time!

Camera and sound

At first glance, the manufacturer was greedy by installing a five-megapixel sensor in the A850. However, if you look away from the numbers and move on to the facts, it becomes clear that there is not much difference between five and eight megapixels in the budget sector. So this is quite the right way to save money! The camera, however, has nothing special to brag about. There is a flash, there is HDR... But the sensor here is very simple, you shouldn’t expect magical photo quality. Here's a couple for you.

The sound in the smartphone is normal, no different from smartphones on this platform.

System and autonomy

The Lenovo smartphone runs Android 4.2 with the Lenovo Launcher shell. That is, on the initial desktop we can immediately see application icons, but it is possible to install widgets. The quick access panel is organized in the same way as other Lenovo smartphones. Here you can see your recent activities, configure Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies, and go to full settings. Among the branded decorations, various icon designs and animations of desktop transitions were noticed. Well, among the useful programs installed by default, I would like to once again note the convenient file manager, where you can find documents not only by location, but also by file type.

The Lenovo Nutrition program is very good, if you get confused, of course. It allows you to set up different power modes, view what is eating up the battery the most (at the software and hardware levels), and set up on and off schedules (for example, during sleep). By “smart settings” in the program we mean optimizing the screen lock (you can disable some applications, and whitelist others; these will be in memory all the time until you evict them from there yourself), disabling network connections, controlling auto-backlight and switching modes depending on the charge (little charge - just switched to economy mode). Among the settings, I noticed the activation of smart energy saving. According to the description, when it is turned on, a self-learning process begins for more accurate energy saving.

It’s interesting, but in practice I was not able to evaluate the advantages of this function. In fact, if you study all this, the smartphone can be configured to work for a very long time, like for an Android device. So, I managed to work with him for three days in an economical mode (conversations, letters, a little Internet, clips). But usually it lasts for a day and a half. Movies in 720p can be watched for about 5-6 hours at average screen brightness.

Performance

Lenovo A850 is powered by MediaTek MTK platform and MT6582M processor. This well-known processor is made using a 28-nanometer process technology and has four ARM Cortex A7 cores, each of which operates at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. It is paired with a Mali-400MP GPU and another gigabyte of RAM. In fact, what we have in front of us is a typical fast budget employee of the last year. The device works quite quickly. Both at the interface level and at the application level. Most 3D games ran without problems. In particular, I tried Dead Trigger 2, Temple Run 2, Asphalt 7, Dragon Age, Sonic Dash, Moto. The only application that did not work correctly (already traditionally) was Real Racing 3. Most likely, it did not have enough system memory (alas, the storage is limited to 4 GB), and the traditional transfer from system memory to external memory was either not implemented in this smartphone, or Is it hidden? Very strange! In all other new Lenovo devices, this function worked (although this operation could not be performed with all programs). But there is an auto-cleaning function designed to unload applications from RAM memory. Below you can see the results of a couple of tests. No surprises, average performance in both graphical applications and HTML5 (Vellamo). It so happened that while testing the smartphone, I was sick and spent time mainly in bed. The Lenovo A850 was very useful to me there: I used it as a video player. To do this, I armed myself with headphones and the Random Film application, which selects a random movie to watch. To my surprise, this program not only offered popular hits, but somehow found out what I liked, and even featured my favorite films a couple of times. This scares me a little, frankly, but this is not what we’re talking about now, but the fact that the Lenovo A850 did an excellent job as a video player, and played movies from the Internet in 720p resolution without much effort. With FullHD everything was not so rosy. So, a heavy film in mkv was pretty slow. Although the other one went without problems. The tests were carried out mainly with the help of a friend of all movie lovers on Android called MX Player.

Competitors

There are not so many budget lamps (except for the Chinese noname), but they exist. The most interesting among them is the smartphone with the stuttering name LG G Pro Lite. This is also a dual-SIM phone, also with a 5.5-inch screen, with the same resolution of 960x540 pixels. Its screen is a little brighter, for my taste it has too much color, unlike the hero of the review, but there are many people who find such bright colors more attractive than “pale and calm”. LG's competitor is somewhat weaker in performance: it is also based on the Mediatek platform, but the processor here is a dual-core MT6577. The competitor looks somewhat more expensive and prestigious, moreover, it is equipped with a stylus that is more than dubious in terms of applicability. The competitor’s camera is also more interesting, and also has eight megapixels. But Lenovo costs on average 500 hryvnia cheaper. I would also like to mention the Fly IQ451 Vista with a 5-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The device runs on MT6589 and, in theory, is somewhat slower than the hero of the review. But the Acer Liquid S1, on the contrary, is a little faster with a 5.7-inch screen (1280x720 pixels). True, it costs more, about 3000 hryvnia.

Bottom line

Lenovo A850 is able to make happy those who want to buy a lamp for little money. This large and convenient smartphone is fast enough to satisfy those who like to game on a smartphone (though not all games will run perfectly), and especially for those who surf the Internet a lot and watch movies on a mobile device. Fortunately, the A850 works for a long time, and if you play around with it properly, you can get a long-lasting and fast smartphone in the budget price category.

4 reasons to buy Lenovo A850

  • Big screen: it's a lampshade!
  • support for two SIM cards;
  • decent battery life;
  • good price/quality/performance ratio.

4 reasons not to buy Lenovo A850

  • The screen is too big: it's a lampshade!
  • Low screen resolution;
  • Low system memory;
  • Average, by today's standards, performance.

Lenovo Operating System

The smartphone runs on Android 4.2. The desktop allows you to immediately see the icons of all applications; it is possible to install widgets. The quick access panel is the same as on all Lenovo phones.

Useful programs are installed by default, for example, a file manager; with its help, searching for documents becomes much easier), they can be found both by file type and location. It is worth noting that the smartphone can be configured in such a way that it can be used for several days in economy mode.

If you use it as usual, it lasts no more than one and a half to two days. If you take into account watching movies, the smartphone will last about 6 hours.

Sound and camera

If you take a closer look, it’s as if they spared megapixels for this phone, but many people know that in this price category there is almost no difference, say, between 5 and 8 pixels. That's why the manufacturers made just such a resolution to save money.

The photographs will, of course, look good, and at first glance you cannot tell that they are not of very high quality. Speaking of sound, there is nothing special in this model; it is the same as in other phones from this manufacturer.

The AnTuTu synthetic test showed that the performance of the A850i was rated at 17326 points. It's weak, but it can work.

Ergonomics and design

Lenovo A850 certainly does not have the largest diagonal among similar “shades”, but its dimensions are still impressive. The phone weighs 184g, which makes it quite hefty, but it's also quite flat at 9.5mm. Due to its size, holding it in one hand is not very convenient, but its functionality completely covers this drawback.

Since the smartphone has a glossy finish, you need to handle it carefully because it is slippery and can always easily slip out of your hands. To remove the cover there is a hook in the lower right corner that will help you do this. Here you can insert a memory card or SIM card without even removing the battery.

The volume of the phone is controlled by buttons located on the right, and on the top end there is a power key; touch buttons for controlling Android are located under the screen.
