Ideal for every day: Review of the Lenovo S60-a smartphone

Good afternoon, today I would like to tell you about a phone like the Lenovo S60, which is the younger brother of the S90 model, from which it differs only in electronics. What does a person feel when he first gets his hands on this phone? Now I will tell you my feelings. Before us is a device with a more than laconic design, devoid of any design frills. The body is made of rather slippery plastic, which in hot climates, when palms sweat, can cause the phone to slip out of your hands, or at least interfere with a comfortable grip. The non-removable back cover covers everything right up to the front panel. Externally, the phone resembles a bar of soap.

Equipment

The smartphone arrived in a small box made of white thick cardboard with a standard design: an image of the device, brief specifications, company logo, etc.

The device is supplied with a microUSB-USB cable, a power supply, a headset, a clip for removing trays and accompanying documentation, as well as a protective film for the screen and a plastic bumper as a nice addition to the standard set.

Benchmark tests

As expected, we tested the device in various benchmarks.

The result in the popular AnTuTu showed 21,380 “parrots”. This, of course, is not over 60,000, like the Samsung Galaxy S6, but the figure is not bad for a smartphone costing 13-15 thousand.

Testing the graphic component in 3D Mark.

Testing Lenovo S60 in GFX Benchmark.

Summarizing the test results, we can say that the smartphone has average performance. Of course, it cannot compete with the flagship, but the device will not get lost in its price segment.

Appearance

The monolithic body of the Lenovo S60 is made of plastic. The front side is almost completely occupied by a 5-inch screen covered with protective glass. Above the display there is an event indicator, a speaker covered with a small grille and a front camera lens.

Below the screen there are touch-sensitive control keys, which are barely noticeable without backlighting on the white body.

The back panel is made entirely of plastic: glossy for white and yellow options, and matte for graphite. The panel smoothly transitions into rounded ends.

On the panel at the top in the corner there is a main camera lens and an LED flash; the Lenovo logo is located in the center.

There is a microUSB connector and two speakers at the bottom, and a 3.5 mm audio output at the top. On the left side there are small ends for SIM cards and microSD.

On the right are the volume key and the power button.

With its dimensions of 143.3x72x7.7 mm, the smartphone weighs 128 grams.

As for the build quality, it is not satisfactory. True, a large smartphone made of glossy plastic with rounded edges tends to slip out of the palm of your hand, you need to be careful.

Design

The appearance of the model is very similar to the iPhone 6. The weight of the smartphone is about 130 g, so it fits comfortably in the hand and does not cause discomfort during use. Glossy plastic collects fingerprints, but the manufacturer has included a transparent case that reliably protects the case.

On the front there is a camera, a speaker, two sensors and three non-backlit touch buttons. At the back there is the main camera and flash.

On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker. On the right side there are two slots for SIM cards and a memory card. By the way, only one SIM card can work in 4G mode. There is an audio output at the top and a microUSB port at the bottom.

The model comes in several colors: Pink, White, Gray, Yellow.

Display

Lenovo S60 received a 5-inch IPS screen with an HD resolution of 1280x720 pixels and a pixel density of 294 ppi. Of course, many are accustomed to FullHD resolution on 5 inches, but HD is quite good for a mid-budget device; The pixelation can only be noticed by looking closely. The IPS matrix provides wide viewing angles, blacks are quite rich and deep.

High contrast and rich colors provide a good picture. There is no color inversion.

Multi-touch technology supports up to five simultaneous touches.

Thanks to the wide brightness range, the smartphone is comfortable to use both in bright sunlight and in complete darkness: the image is readable under any conditions.

Screen and sound

Turning on the Lenovo S60-a screen for the first time causes a storm of sensations. The bright, rich colors of the wallpaper screen literally attack the user's optic nerve, convincing him that no one else has such a colorful screen.

The screen is really bright and the colors are rich and natural. It is comfortable to work with the device outdoors in dim sunshine already at a brightness of slightly more than half the settings scale. The IPS matrix with HD resolution (1280x720) is very economical , and does not drain the battery much when using the screen for a long time.

However, the downside of efficiency is that viewing angles are not very large - when the view deviates from the perpendicular in any direction, the picture darkens, but not much. White color, compared to the screens of other smartphones, is perhaps the most natural.

As for the sound, it is worthy of praise. During a conversation, the interlocutor's voice is clear, clear and clear. The ringing speaker does not wheeze and is moderately saturated with high and low frequencies.

The music playback test through the built-in player showed good detail of the sound composition and soft bass even without using an equalizer. Music lovers will certainly like the sound.

The same goes for sound in video. The built-in player is capable of playing most AVI movies and some MKVs with sound without any problems. But you need to be prepared that the downloaded movie will be played without sound. A third-party player , for example, MX Player with an AC3 codec downloaded from the Internet, correct the situation

Iron

The smartphone runs on a quad-core Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. The GPU is Mali Adreno 306; RAM capacity - 2 GB, internal memory - 8 GB, expandable up to 32 GB.

Such characteristics cannot be called powerful, however, they ensure smooth operation of the interface, the browser and the launch of quite heavy games that can be played by lowering the graphic settings.

Software

Lenovo S60 runs Android 5.0.2. with the proprietary Vibe UI 2.0 shell. with FOTA update support.

The proprietary launcher is not much different from the standard Android shell, apart from a small modification.

There is no application menu; all programs are located on desktops, but they can be grouped into separate folders. There are many pre-installed applications, most of which can and should be removed.

A little about the interface

The Lenovo S60-a interface is represented by a proprietary add-on VIBE UI 2.0 . The OS out of the box is Android 4.4.4 KitKat. But, during testing, our device received an over-the-air update to version 5.02 .

This had almost no effect on the appearance. For users accustomed to the standard interface of Android devices, the VIBE UI interface may be somewhat confusing, because... This shell does not have a collection of applications, and the list of settings has been completely redesigned.

For those newbies, the installed software includes a special “Tutorial” application, which clearly shows how to use most of the smartphone’s functions.

In general, the interface is convenient, but the menu font seemed too small to us, and the letters are too dense, which can cause discomfort for people with impaired vision. In the notification line, you can enable the display of battery charge as a percentage, which is convenient. But for some reason the developers placed the numbers in the battery icon itself, making them small and difficult to read.

Of the installed applications, we really liked the Security antivirus package , which includes user data protection, theft protection, junk file cleaning, and backup.

But, unfortunately, after updating to OS version 5.02, this wonderful application disappeared from the list of applications without a trace, as did a number of other convenient programs, such as a calendar. We hope that the company will somehow return these wonderful applications to users of updated smartphones.

Connection

The smartphone supports 2G/3G/4G LTE FDD Band 1, 3, 7, 20 networks (2100 MHz/1800 MHz/2600 MHz/800 MHz). And also work with LTE Cat 4 networks, WLAN: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/GLONASS.

Working with two SIM cards is standard: both cards can be active in standby mode, which one is responsible for receiving calls, and which one is responsible for receiving only messages - the user himself can set it using the smartphone settings.

Working hours

The device is equipped with a fast 2150 mAh battery. The indicator is average; you should not count on the device being active for a long time - it will definitely run out by the end of the day. But if you use it more carefully, then it will be enough.

When testing the smartphone, it was 100 percent charged. Having connected to Wi-Fi, I began to actively download test programs, launch games and just study the interface. As a result, the Lenovo S60 was discharged to 20 percent after 4 hours. With such a load the indicator is average. In standby mode, the device, according to the developers, will last 336 hours.

Battery

The battery capacity is 2150 mAh, which is not very much for a 5-inch smartphone. This volume is enough for 3-4 hours of intensive use (continuous viewing of videos or games) and 10-11 hours of moderate use. There are also several energy saving modes.

So, for example, using the emergency saving mode (which retains the ability to use only basic functions), you can last a day.

It takes two hours to fully charge the device from the power supply, and about five hours from a USB cable.

Camera

The Lenovo S60 has a main camera resolution of 13 megapixels and a front camera of 5 megapixels. The main camera has autofocus and flash, video is recorded in FullHD format, and the front camera is recorded in HD format.

Pictures taken with the main camera are clear, noise-free, and with natural color reproduction.

At night, images are also acceptable, with minimal color inversion and graininess.

Lenovo S60 gaming performance

Despite the fact that the gadget has frankly average characteristics, it coped quite well with many heavy games.

The latest version of the fighting game Mortal Kombat X slows down a bit, fps is low, but you can play, the graphics are at a high level.

A cool shooter from Gameloft - Modern Combat 5 - runs almost without glitches. Rare slowdowns are noticeable in difficult moments, when blood splashes or something special happens.

The lighter game Earn to Die 2 works without the slightest problem.

From the above examples, we can conclude that the Lenovo S60 can easily handle many games, with the exception of projects with top graphics.
