Smartphone sensors measure physical quantities and transmit them to the application processor. Phones' accelerometer is a built-in electronic component that measures tilt and movement. The proximity sensor detects when a user is holding the phone close to their face during a call and turns off the display to prevent keypresses and draining battery from the display. The S580 has a Dual SIM feature, which means you can insert two different SIM cards and use them both from the same phone.

Lenovo S580 - An affordable smartphone, or Why pay more?

In November 2014, Lenovo S580 was practically the cheapest smartphone with a 5-inch screen. And this includes completely Chinese manufacturers. So, in early November it was purchased for 5990 rubles. in Svyaznoy.

Now, with a price of about 8,500 rubles. - a solid budget mid-ranger with a couple of dozen competitors and a significant advantage - the brand. One way or another, Lenovo is moving with huge strides into the top five world leaders.

What can a $140 smartphone do and what shouldn’t you expect from it? This is what our review is about. We will try to get away from banal things like “on the right side we see three hardware buttons...” - there are a lot of photographs and descriptions on the Internet. In addition, for a phone, the location of the buttons and the camera’s shift to the right side are not always the key factors of choice. In the review, we will try to note exactly the features of use - everything that is not visible in advertisements and on shop windows, what is hidden behind the dry performance figures and characteristics of the camera and Wi-Fi module.

Packaged

So, let's start with the important thing - the smartphone comes in a small, neat white box ☺. In fact, a feature of the phone's delivery is that the basic package includes a spare film and a plastic bumper case of dubious quality.

The plastic is clear and hard, with a stand at the back. It is easy to attach and remove, but fits tightly, without any play. The disadvantage is the appearance. The bumper visually significantly enlarges the smartphone.

The basic kit is standard: an adapter with a detachable USB cord, a headset, and instructions. The headset is very ordinary, the sound is mediocre, but it does not cause disgust and is quite suitable for listening to the radio or Potap and Nastya.

Outside

In addition to the complete package, a protective film is already glued to the phone. The screen itself, by the way, according to the manufacturer, is covered with impact-resistant glass. I note that glass is indeed present. Moreover, decent quality. After three months of use without films, the screen was significantly scratched, but the phone was subjected to extremely harsh operating conditions: carried in a pocket with keys and change, repeatedly dropped from a table, etc. In my opinion, the phone transferred everything to a solid 4. On a five-point system.

The hardware buttons are pleasantly rough and non-slip. Tactile - aluminum. They are “in their place” - at any time you can easily reach the power button (aka lock), and during a conversation your fingers rest on the volume rocker. The headphone jack is on the top, so the headset cord does not get kinked in your pocket.

I'll note the back cover. It is made of polycarbonate with laser engraving - the lid is not matte or glossy, a slight pleasant roughness is tactilely felt over the entire surface. However, it does not provide the non-slip confidence that is inherent in a soft-touch coating.

The front panel is framed by a glossy black insert made of fairly soft plastic. After another “incident,” a noticeable pothole appeared on the plastic (visible in the photo). The frame extends a millimeter beyond the screen, so you can safely place the phone face down on a table.

Yes, the phone is very light - with two SIM cards and a battery it weighs 128 grams. Overall, the phone feels great in the hand, and given its small thickness (8 mm) and light weight, it is just as comfortable to carry it in a breast pocket or in jeans.

Inside

The basis of the phone is a chipset based on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon MSM 8212 processor. This is a quad-core processor with a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz. The Adreno 302 video accelerator is responsible for video output. This is complemented by 1024 MB of RAM. This configuration allows the smartphone to confidently cope with almost any everyday tasks: calls, casual games, surfing the Internet, music and video. But the S580 is clearly not predisposed to heavy modern and not so heavy games - the device heats up significantly, the battery drains almost instantly, and stuttering is still observed. Interestingly, some users complain about interface microlags when scrolling through lists. This clearly “childish” disease can be treated simply - just forcefully turn on GPU rendering; experimentally it turned out that this trick has practically no effect on the duration of work.

The picture on the IPS screen is clear and high-contrast; half brightness is enough for comfortable use of the phone even on a sunny day.

In general, the screen is frankly the strong point of the device: HD resolution, strong impact-resistant coating, quality and color saturation.

In direct sunlight, of course, the maximum level is required, but the image looks just fine. There are only two disadvantages: the lack of an oleophobic coating and relatively low sensitivity (does not cause discomfort). But, surprisingly, the screen does not collect fingerprints and requires radical maintenance no more than once a month.

The device has 8 GB of permanent memory, while taking into account the OS, about 5.6 GB is available to the user. Memory cards supported. I tested up to 32 GB inclusive - everything works fine. By default, all applications are installed in the internal memory, in the settings, literally with one tap on the button you can transfer applications to the memory card and set it as the default. However, this is a standard Android feature.

As for the camera, everything can be described in two words: there is a camera. Even two. In the currently popular measurement units: 8 MP and 2 MP. True, you should use the main one only for something not very memorable - the photo quality does not even reach the average level. And this is under normal conditions, but at night the pictures are frankly weak - the flash is frankly either late or fires earlier than necessary. (Below each photo there is a link to the full-size file on Yandex.Photos.)

Moving objects for the camera are generally a disaster... Panorama and HDR modes are not supported by the stock camera. Installing third-party applications solves the problem, but the quality is still poor. In general, the quality of the photo is sufficient to capture important information - the text is clearly visible, faces and other parts of the body are visible in the photo, the orchid looks like an orchid.

The front camera is suitable for Skype or Viber. Taking into account that your subscriber knows and remembers what you look like and does not try to make out the details of the hedgehog in the fog. But, again, when compared with competitors’ cameras, it is slightly higher than the general level.

The main disadvantages of the phone: the lack of a notification LED and backlit keys. The absence of a diode is successfully compensated for by third-party free programs that allow you to send a signal with a flash, as in the products of one very well-known company from Cupertino. It certainly looks impressive. The lack of backlighting takes some getting used to...

The battery in the device is removable. Capacity - 2150 mAh. Considering the far from top-end hardware, this capacity lasts up to 5 days in standby mode with the Wi-Fi module always on and auto-sync. When using the phone in the mode - 10-20 minutes of conversation, Wi-Fi and mobile 3G Internet on, up to 2 hours of games (online poker) - the phone charge lasts for 1.5-2 full days. In serious games, the charge can “fly away” in 30-40 minutes, which is due to a weak processor and video card, which will be forced to operate at maximum frequency without downtime.

Naturally, the device can establish a connection with space for self-determination - GPS works perfectly. Cold start - 10-15 minutes, subsequently - almost instantly, maximum - up to 1 minute. a-GPS supported. But the main thing is that GLONASS satellites are supported.

Depending on the region - from 4 to 6 pcs. Signal reception is stable without any complaints.

The Internet is provided by a Wi-Fi module with n-band support and a 3G module. In the first case, the signal quality is comparable to Sony ZL and provides absolutely stable communication throughout the apartment, despite the walls, and allows you to stay connected under the balcony on the street, despite the fact that the router is on the 10th floor. In the case of 3G, the speed reaches 5 MB/s and reliably provides, for example, VoIP communications.

Bluetooth connects easily with Rapoo headset and supports A2DP profile.

In general, the phone fulfills all its assigned duties without any complaints.

After switching on

The smartphone runs Android 4.4 KitKat with the proprietary VibeUI shell. More precisely, miniVibeUI, although I would call it underVibeUI. The fact is that Lenovo has developed an excellent shell, but due to the budget of the device, it has cut down a significant part of the functions. Therefore, the result is much closer to pure Android than to a proprietary shell.

Theater begins with a hanger, and smart work begins with a desktop. First of all, there is no application menu (AppDrawer) and all applications are simply located on desktops, of which there can be an infinite number or few.

Special transition effects and animation are supported, as well as a huge selection of online themes.

However, after a little dance with a tambourine, the function is only available in the device’s home country, so you need to convince the phone that it is in China. Fortunately, this is done by replacing 2 letters in the build.prop file. In any case, themes can be installed manually.

Finally, we get to the main task - making calls! Lenovo did their best here. Their branded dialer, IdeaFriend, will give odds even to analogues from Sony and others.

Everything is convenient: a smart keyboard that automatically moves towards the tilt of the phone, pinch to enlarge the font, smart calls when you bring the phone to your ear (when viewing a contact or writing an SMS, just bring the phone to your ear to make a call!), automatic merging of contacts, support for groups and filters - everything for calls. The only negative that really spoils the overall impression is the lack of the ability to install a SIM card for calls by default, and again, a third-party application is required.

The SMS client, by the way, is combined with the phone book, and the transition between them occurs in one tap.

Correspondence backgrounds are supported, including custom ones, and interesting features like sending delay.

The phone settings differ from the generally accepted ones, not for the better: as already noted, there are no advanced settings for SIM cards and the developer menu is very limited.

Due to this, the average user is completely deprived of the ability to adjust the animation speed and other useful things. Of course, dancing with a tambourine decides everything, more on that below.

"Utilities" from the manufacturer. ShareIT allows you to very quickly connect your phone to a PC or any other Android device. Only for this, the program must be installed on both. But data transfer occurs at the highest possible Wi-Fi speed!

SyncIT - backup of your SMS, contacts and calls, including to the cloud. The data is encrypted in order to avoid, so to speak, misunderstandings.

The calendar is convenient and functional, synchronizes with Google, and also allows you to create schedules and reminders about events.

Calculator - where would we be without it? Plus, he's handsome! And when you turn the phone to landscape orientation, it turns, surprise surprise, into engineering!

Accessories. Everything is complicated - there are no films, no covers, no bumpers in free retail. Only delivery from China. Only sometimes a couple of models slip by, but not always and not everywhere. But, you buy a phone to “phone” and not turn it into a Christmas tree, right? In addition, you already have two films and a bumper included.

Dancing with a tambourine. They are not necessary - the phone has a unique feature - it works great out of the box! But only for basic loads for the average user. A sophisticated user is simply obliged to get root and install various patches, mods and other additions. And here the phone is at its best - root in one button, add-ons and firmware mods are posted on popular forums, popular custom recoveries (TWRP, CWM) are also present. Well, plus modules for the XPosed Framework, which will help you customize your phone exactly “for you”. But that's a completely different story.

The bottom line is. The phone is good. He works. He does not break down and silently endures all his misadventures. It holds a charge. He always knows where he is. But!

I don’t like him - he doesn’t have... a soul, or something. He's ordinary. Not unique. Same as its competitors: Fly IQ452, Philips S398, Prestigio MultiPhone 5507, GSmart Simba SX1. The same, only Lenovo. Would I recommend him? Probably in this price range, yes (due to the brand), but I would also advise adding a little and getting something else. It’s difficult to evaluate, 10 points for a budget smartphone is one thing, for a smartphone as a whole it’s another. I’ll give two ratings: a solid 8 for budget and a five against the general background.

Especially for Helpix.ru.

Packaging, delivery and appearance

When we got acquainted with the device, we could not shake the feeling that during its development, priority was given to accessibility and popularity, and the aesthetic component was pushed into the farthest drawer. We cannot say that Lenovos580 has become worse because of this, but, alas, in this case we cannot praise the manufacturer for its attractive appearance. In other words, the new product is perfect for those who are used to counting money and are buying a smartphone, and not an object for worship.

There is almost nothing left of its stylish and future-oriented progenitor, and the faceless black glossy plastic has been “sweetened” with a very small thickness for the sake of order.

In a standard-sized cardboard box, the buyer will find only the essentials: the phone itself, a micro-USB cable, a charger plug and standard in-ear headphones.

Let's face it, there are no luxuries, and you can already forget about the glorious times when the standard package included many additional accessories, a disk with drivers and a coupon for downloading a certain amount of software. Of course, such savings can be explained, but we were still a little sad.

As an excuse, it should still be mentioned that, despite all its secondary design, the Lenovos580 has some chic, so the design cannot be called an outright failure. There is no zest in it, but in terms of practicality, functionality and convenience, the smartphone will easily give a head start to many competitors, who, by the way, cost significantly more.

Screen

It is the quality of the display that for many is the fundamental factor when choosing. Indeed, few people are interested in the “average-ceiling” scores of test packages or abstract benchmark indicators, but we see the smartphone screen every day. In this sense, the designers of Lenovos580 can only be praised. They equipped the new product with a “standard” IPS matrix with a diagonal of 5 inches, which has a sufficient level of brightness, decent color rendition and good viewing angles, but, unfortunately, clearly needs factory calibration.

But what the smartphone frankly lacks is an oleophobic coating.

It not only softens colors and seriously improves the subjective level of comfort, but also allows you to get rid of dirt and fingerprints without any difficulty. The savings, in general, turned out to be a pittance, so if the comfort of working with a touch screen is in the first place for you, you should either refuse the purchase altogether or bother purchasing a good protective film.

Interface and software shell

Out of the box, the buyer receives almost “pure” Android version 4.3 with minimal cosmetic changes.

Compared to HTCSense or SamsungTouchWiz, the Lenovo model looks rather faded, which, unfortunately, is quite expected. The smartphone claims to be a leader in the budget segment, so it would be too naive to count on its unique shell.

On the other hand, we did not observe any software conflicts or glitches, and the OS allows you to easily add any of several dozen third-party shells to your smartphone. Agree that stability and a standardized interface often mean more than a state-of-the-art OS that consumes a lot of system resources.

Autonomy

The removable 2150 mAh battery does not imply outstanding battery life, but if you do not load the Lenovos580 with “heavy” 3D games, you can count on a day or even a little more. In this regard, by the way, flagships from Samsung, Sony or HTC with their sophisticated hardware look even sadder, since they simply die from exhaustion at the end of the working day.

And the ability to replace the battery yourself is worth a lot: the designers did not follow fashion trends and made the case collapsible, not monolithic.

Only one thing can be said about the charging speed: it is quite sufficient, and it is quite possible to “feed” the battery quickly.

This will take no more than 20–30 minutes, but will provide the smartphone with energy for another hour or two. And if you disable background synchronization and remove resource-intensive applications from memory, then “stretching” the battery for 2 days is more than possible.
